Introduction to Goat Yoga CT

Goat yoga is a playful and therapeutic fusion of traditional yoga practice with the added joy of interacting with friendly, free-roaming goats. What started as a quirky wellness trend has rapidly gained popularity, attracting yogis and animal lovers alike to farms and studios across the country.

The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of what to expect in a goat yoga session with The Omstead, the benefits of this unique practice, what to wear for comfort and practicality, and where to find classes near you.

As someone who loves both yoga and animals, I can’t begin to explain the fun behind this experience. The idea of stretching into a downward dog while adorable goats trot around (or even jump on your back!) is both exciting and heartwarming. Let’s explore the world of goat yoga together!

What is Goat Yoga?

Goat yoga is a delightful fusion of traditional yoga practice with the added presence of friendly, free-roaming goats. During a session, participants move through various yoga poses while playful goats wander around, interact, and sometimes even hop onto their backs for an extra challenge (and a lot of laughs).

Origins and Rise of Goat Yoga

Goat yoga began in 2016 when Lainey Morse, a farm owner in Oregon, hosted the first-ever class as a way to combine the therapeutic effects of yoga with the joy of spending time with animals. What started as a local event quickly gained national attention, spreading across the U.S. and beyond.

Today, goat yoga is a popular wellness trend, with classes offered in farms, barns, and even urban studios looking to bring a touch of nature into the practice. We, at The Omstead, like to bring our goats everywhere! You can find us at wineries, breweries, schools, and local businesses!

The Playful Nature of Goats in Yoga

Goats are naturally curious, social, and mischievous, making them the perfect yoga companions. Their playful energy adds an element of lightheartedness to the session, encouraging laughter, relaxation, and a break from the typical structured yoga environment.

Whether they nuzzle your face during a stretch or climb onto your back in a plank pose, these adorable animals create a unique, stress-relieving atmosphere that enhances the yoga experience in an unforgettable way.

What to Expect in a Goat Yoga Class

A goat yoga class is unlike any traditional yoga session—you can expect a lighthearted, fun-filled experience that blends mindful movement with spontaneous animal interaction.

Class Structure

Most goat yoga sessions follow a relaxed format, typically lasting between 45 minutes to an hour. The class begins with a short introduction, where instructors guide participants on how to engage with the goats and set expectations for the session. From there, the yoga practice begins, incorporating beginner-friendly poses that allow for interaction with the goats. The session often ends with a few moments of relaxation and an opportunity to cuddle with the goats.

The Environment

Classes usually take place outdoors on a farm or in a barn, surrounded by nature and fresh air. The goats roam freely among participants, climbing, snuggling, or simply observing the class with curiosity. Unlike a quiet, meditative yoga studio, the atmosphere is lively, with the occasional bleat or playful hop adding to the charm.

Common Yoga Poses

Since goat yoga is more about fun and relaxation than an intense workout, the poses are generally simple and accessible. Some commonly practiced poses include:

  • Downward Dog – A perfect opportunity for a goat to walk underneath or hop on your back!

  • Child’s Pose – A great moment to enjoy a gentle goat nuzzle.

  • Cat-Cow Stretch – Often accompanied by a curious goat standing nearby or mimicking your movements.

  • Seated Poses and Gentle Stretches – Ideal for snuggling a goat or letting one rest in your lap.

Interaction with the Goats

Throughout the class, goats may nuzzle, climb, or simply lie beside participants, offering a mix of entertainment and relaxation. We usually put some treats on your mat to encourage their interaction. As is common knowledge, goats love to eat! Some goats are playful and energetic, while others prefer to cuddle and observe. Whether they’re balancing on your back or nibbling on your mat, their presence adds an unpredictable yet delightful element to the practice.

A Fun and Relaxed Atmosphere

Unlike traditional yoga, goat yoga is not about perfecting your poses or breaking a sweat—it’s about having fun, reducing stress, and enjoying the moment. Laughter is encouraged, and interruptions from a curious goat are part of the experience. Whether you're an experienced yogi or a complete beginner, goat yoga is a welcoming and uplifting activity that combines movement, mindfulness, and animal therapy in a truly unique way.

Benefits of Goat Yoga

Goat yoga offers more than just a fun and unique experience—it provides emotional, physical, and social benefits that make it a well-rounded wellness activity.

Emotional Health Benefits

  • Stress Relief Through Animal Interaction – Studies show that spending time with animals can reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and promote relaxation. The playful and affectionate nature of goats adds an extra layer of joy to the practice.

  • Enhanced Mood and Increased Happiness – Goat interactions trigger the release of serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters linked to feelings of happiness and well-being. The simple act of laughing at a goat’s antics can instantly boost your mood.

Physical Benefits

  • Improved Flexibility and Balance – Practicing yoga poses helps enhance flexibility and stability, and the occasional challenge of a goat jumping on your back adds a fun, unexpected twist to core engagement. And I promise they aren't heavy! Our little guys weigh in at about 20 pounds.

  • Engaging Different Muscle Groups – The combination of holding poses and adjusting to the movement of goats can activate stabilizing muscles, making the session a light but effective workout. Even laughter itself can strengthen your core muscles!

Community Building

  • Connecting with Like-Minded Individuals – Goat yoga attracts people looking for a fun, lighthearted way to stay active, creating a welcoming environment for participants of all backgrounds.

  • A Social Experience That Deepens Friendships – Whether you attend with friends or make new ones in class, goat yoga fosters shared laughter and connection, making it a great bonding experience.

Whether you're looking for stress relief, physical activity, or just a fun way to spend time with animals and people, goat yoga offers a perfect balance of wellness and joy. Contact The Omstead today to set up your own private goat yoga experience for you and your friends!

What to Wear for Goat Yoga

Dressing appropriately for goat yoga ensures you stay comfortable and can fully enjoy the experience without any wardrobe distractions. Here are some key recommendations:

Comfortable, Stretchy Clothing

  • Opt for athletic wear like leggings, yoga pants, and fitted tops that allow for easy movement and flexibility.

  • Avoid overly loose or baggy clothing, as it can get tangled or be tempting for goats to nibble on.

Layer Up for Outdoor Classes

  • Since most goat yoga sessions are held outdoors, the weather can be unpredictable.

  • Wear light layers that you can remove if you warm up during class or add on if it gets chilly.

  • Consider moisture-wicking fabrics for hot weather and a light hoodie or jacket for cooler conditions.

  • We also recommend that your athleisure covers your back, just in case some little goat feet decide to give you a light massage.

Avoid Loose Jewelry and Accessories

  • Goats are naturally curious and may try to nibble on dangling earrings, necklaces, bracelets, or drawstrings.

  • To prevent distractions or potential harm to the goats, it is best to keep accessories minimal.

Footwear Tips

  • Most people practice barefoot, as it allows for better grip and stability on the mat.

  • If you prefer to wear shoes, choose supportive, non-slip footwear that provides traction, especially if the class is held on grass or uneven surfaces.

Dressing thoughtfully for goat yoga ensures you stay comfortable and focused on the fun, playful experience—without worrying about a goat stealing your shoelaces!
